How Kids Under 12 Years Old Should Train (and why most training for kids doesn’t work)

[Special Opportunity for Kids at End!]

Here’s a fun fact most people don’t know: it’s pretty much impossible to add muscle to your body before you hit puberty

Have you ever seen an absolutely jacked, Arnold Schwarzenegger looking kid?

Yea, me neither, and we probably never will.

The fact that young kids can’t add muscle has HUGE implications for how they should train. Namely, we shouldn’t train them to get bigger and stronger, because, well…they can’t get bigger and stronger.

But there’s lots of other things we can work on. Namely:

  • Learning technique

  • Improving tendon strength

  • Improving certain aspects of explosiveness (not the muscle-related ones)

  • Improving balance and coordination

And, most importantly: teaching kids to LOVE training, so when they are old enough to really get after it, they CAN’T WAIT to workout.

This isn’t to say kids can’t get better. You know that sports are about more than just muscle. In fact, muscle and strength plays less of a role in sport success than most people think. Kids can and should train, and they definitely can improve.

Just not through getting ripped like The Rock, or using advanced exercises that only the older kids can benefit from.

When I train kids, I focus on:

  • teaching excellent technique

  • challenging balance and coordination

  • making sure they have fun!

If we knock those three things out of the park, we’ve set the stage for them to have great success later in life, when it really counts.

That’s why I’m offering a special camp for young kids only.

It doesn’t make a lot of sense for a 9 year old to line up next to a 17 year old football player, do the same thing, and expect the same result. It’s not very much fun for the 17 year old (understandably), and the younger kid doesn’t get the best training experience either.

Our next camp will separate the young kids from the older ones, so each group gets a more tailored experience they can truly benefit from.

I want young kids to have opportunities and to benefit too, just like the older ones, and that’s why I’m offering a special camp just for them.
